Reducing our Carbon Footprint

In 2023, See Moreton achieved a significant milestone by completing its baseline carbon accounting, signalling a profound commitment to sustainability in the face of pressing environmental challenges.

This achievement carries profound importance, especially given the escalating effects of climate change on marine ecosystems, including beloved species such as the green sea turtle. As rising sea temperatures, sea level rise, and ocean acidification disrupt the intricate harmony of marine habitats, green sea turtles encounter growing challenges. These threats range from impacts on their reproductive cycles to disturbances in prey availability and heightened stress on their coral reef homes.

By taking proactive steps to reduce emissions, See Moreton not only mitigates its own environmental footprint but also contributes to the broader effort to safeguard vulnerable species like the green sea turtle. This commitment underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat climate change and protect our oceans’ precious biodiversity for generations to come.

Contribution to Research

CoralWatch is a well-established citizen science program founded in 2002 that aims to create public understanding of the value of reefs and provides opportunities to actively help save the reef through participation in scientific research and education.

Each year, CoralWatch hosts a teacher Professional Development workshop onboard See Moreton, where teachers can:

  • Investigate Moreton Bay corals, their importance, and environmental issues such as coral bleaching
  • Utilise CoralWatch tools and curriculum-linked materials to bring the reef into their classroom
  • Learn about corals on the Tangalooma Wrecks

How we can help the environment
Leave No Trace
  • Dispose of your rubbish responsibly.
  • Avoid single-use plastics, including balloons, as they can end up not only in landfills but also in the ocean, where unsuspecting marine animals may ingest them, leading to serious harm and even death.
  • Don’t forget to bring your drink bottle and keepcup!

 

Respect the flora and fauna
  • Refraining from standing on coral or wrecks; corals are slow-growing organisms that require years to mature.
  • Choose reef-safe sunscreen to avoid harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate.
  • Remember not to touch coral or wildlife, whether dead or alive, for their safety and yours.
  • Avoid feeding or chasing marine wildlife.
  • Never collect or purchase souvenirs derived from rare and threatened species like coral, shells and turtle shell.
